Well celebrations and holidays are coming thick and fast at this time of the year. With Diwali in couple of days, the festive feeling has geared up.The Opera house also lit’s up into a spectacular gold to mark the triumph of light over darkness. Diwali is such a special occasion that Indians communities are proud to share with the world no matter where ever they reside. I have lived in few countries and no matter how big or small the communities has been, it has always been a joyous moment to cherish and enjoy. The lighting of house with diyas and electric lights adds an euphoria to the atmosphere.
This time I thought of making this Instant crispy jalebi and honestly it was fabulous. Thanks to this wonderful youtube video that I had pinned several months back. Apart from this instant crispy jalebi, I have plans to make this pineapple coconut barfi too because my younger one really loves the barfi.
Before we dive into this recipe, here is a beautiful poem shared by my other half. I am sure you all will love it.
It’s the season again to be happy and cheerful
A good reason to practice forgiveness, mercy and be dutiful
I told myself shouldn’t I do something different this time round
Apart from the usual sweetmeats, fireworks and splashes of Light & colour abound
So I put on my working apron, duster in hand determined to declutter.
I went to work on the cobwebs; I went to work on the dust mites
I went to work on the pantry and I went to work on the laundry
I went to work on the garage and I went to work on the attic.
Why I even went to work on the garden that had grown through neglect.
Little was I to realise what gifts would I receive for my labour.
For constrained amongst cobwebs and dust I found my long lost forgotten dreams
All wrapped up and covered in layers of layers of filth.
I dusted them, cleaned them and carefully placed them on my mantel piece
Where I could see them every day and they serve me a reminder of why I am here.
My Pantry and laundry were a completely different story.
I found food stocked there that never resonated with me.
In my laundry, I found clothes that seemed to be from a forgotten era.
Some so small and tiny that I wondered if they ever belonged to me.
So when my kids came home that evening, I gave up on my cooking and we played all evening.
For a missed meal will easily be forgotten but children growing up to become adults like us would never be the same.
Things I found in my garage and my attic were embarrassing beyond my belief.
For I found hidden amongst its murky labyrinths
Thoughts, beliefs, opinions, and judgements’ passed on the not guilty.
I didn’t spare a moment and cleaned them up with a vengeance of one sorely, deeply hurt
How could I, I wondered let so much of filth and murk accumulate?
The answer thankfully lay in my garden as I looked woefully at the weeds
They had grown taller, healthier and more robust than my beautiful roses & fruiting trees
I realised it was just neglect, focussing on what sounded right and not what truly was.
I realised I was doing things that were urgent but not important.
I realised I was listening to the wrong gospel of people who called themselves my friends
I realised I was listening more to sounds of world than the words in my heart and head.
So as the previous day ended and I heralded a new dawn, I made myself a promise
To erase my past and make a fresh start.
This Diwali I will light a lamp that will pave the way for a new beginning
One where I will not judge people, nor neglect my dear ones and never forget my dreams.
I pray and hope you will find your calling this festive season and like me find what you may have left behind in the mad rush of growing up to be a woman, a mother, a wife or an alibi for some one.
And I pray that you remember the little girl in you who simply wants to be.
To light a lamp, have a bite and share some joy.
