Eggless chickpea waffles

This eggless chickpea waffles are just so easy to make and with all the lovely ingredients combined, it can be an ideal treat for breakfast or brunch.

Rise and shine .. yummy breakfast is ready .. loads of choices, sweet & savoury  chickpea waffles, pancakes with berries drizzled with maple syrup, scrambled eggs on sour dough toast and  freshly brewed coffee. I heard a fairy come and whisper in my dreams. Well that’s become a distant dream these days with the whole world busy chasing their own dreams. Elaborate breakfasts on weekdays isn’t a norm anymore.

I have figured out few healthy choices for our family to ease the morning drill, so weekday mornings have started getter these days. I generally look forward to weekends where I love to treat my family with warm and delicious breakfast with nice tea. These eggless chickpea waffles are sometimes in menu too.



I remember growing up in India, where mum would plan and make elaborate breakfasts and not to mentioned the varieties every morning to kick start our day. chickpea crepes were one of them and though it was not my favourite but I still love it because of its nutty flavours paired with crunch onions and mild spices. Thinking of varieties now, my boys have acquired western palate so pancakes, cheese, eggs sour dough bread, sweet waffles are some of the choice I am left with. Occasionally fermented crepes ( dosa ) do fall into their lists.

Now making them try these chickpea waffles was something I was apprehensive about. Honestly they just loved it and with tomato ketchup it was great treat for them apart from being healthy.

Eggless chickpea waffles


  • 1 1/2 cup Chickpea flour ( besan )
  • 1/2 cup plain flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 small tomato finely chopped
  • 1 small sized onion finally chopped
  • 1/3 cup fresh coriander leaves
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • salt to taste

Mix all the ingredients and make a batter with a medium consistency.

Heat the waffle maker.

Brush in enough oil on both the sides of the maker.

Pour the batter in the waffle maker and let it cook for few minutes until nice and golden.

Chickpea flour takes more time to cook than usual the plain flour.

Once done, remove and serve hot with tomato ketchup.

    Hello Shibani,

    I the lazy was lounging away to nothing then your comment made a wake up call. As fresh as your morning breakfast. It did seem like a modern take to the chilla or tomato omelette. Any alchemy is hailed for the kids.
